Yuri pairing confirmed? Maybe but this is just demonstration on how the art can make things look awkwardly wrong
Sorry for the delay people! I had a stiff week last week, including one tough-arse examinations. Much, much worse was the delay in the release of the sixth episode by my favoured translation groups, however they were able to release it a couple of days later. Sixth and seventh episodes still delivers the same space opera goodness but it opens more depth and speculation about the settings and the universe. Also, unexpectedly, friendship between Marika, Mami, and Chiaki slowly gets developed! Ending credits sequence really give clues on some aspects, after all. If the story telling, plot, and audio presentation gets better and better on each episode, I can’t say the same with the visual presentation. It’s still this series’ Achilles’ heel, it seems, or I’m just too spoilt by visually-impressive anime from the past few years… Sigh…

If my impression of the fourth episode was a bit bland and bored, then my thoughts on this episode is otherwise. Mouretsu Pirates is back again on it’s feet and bounces back. Despite all of these, it’s Achilles’ heel is still obvious — the quality of animation, or lack thereof. I would not expound on that yet as we’re just on the episode entry now. It’s pretty good that the art doesn’t suffer much because of the animation’s quality. Anyway, it seems to me that we’re already finished with the “introductory arc” and “the ‘Marika starts in her pirate life’ arc” begins next week. Nicely paced, Satelight, even though it feels to some that this episode was paced a little bit faster than the previous episode.

With all of the panicky tweets and a blog post I made yesterday, the fourth episode still got a release. Thank God for that! This episode still has the same overall pacing of the earlier episodes. Frankly, the relaxed pacing of this series makes it a bit harder for me to narrate or summarise, however, I’ll take this as a challenge in my narration skills. There’s almost no difference from the overall impressions of the earlier episodes but episode 4 really, really feels like a huge chunk of a filler with some relevant plot in the end. Am I the only one getting this feeling?

The Odette II
This episode clearly defines the space opera in Mouretsu Pirates and the tsundere personality of Chiaki. My wish for Chiaki’s intentions or true side to be revealed still isn’t granted but this episode still delivered the promise. The episode still focuses on the personality and abilities of Marika as a strategist, which is an important quality in a ship captain. This ‘introductory’ phase or pacing isn’t bad as we’re being acquainted to the show without having to confuse us with a fast pacing.

Nice ship!
Geez, I’m typing this again on TextEdit due to the friendly neighbourhood’s power distributor failing to meet quality standards again. Oh well, but I was still able to get the second episode of Mouretsu Pirates, a.k.a Bodacious Space Pirates, and I can say it’s building-up quite a good story, I hope it stays this way. We can’t tell yet if this would be consistent or not, but with this episode, I can tell it’s quite consistent. Also, Mother of God, Kurihara Chiaki appears to be THE badass Hanazawa Kana role to-date. Though, we still don’t know what would her role in the story be. It’s now safer to bet that she’s a friend who would help Marika in adjusting/acquainting to her life as a space pirate.

Mouretsu Pirates cast
Mr.A
liked it, and he posted the first impressions even before I got my chance to post it. My original plan for this would be for Mr.A to do the episode blogging while I’d be the one in-charge of the First Impressions but I wasn’t able to tell him so here we are writing about the EP blogs. If there’s something I can say about this is it has potential, even if it has references on
Star Wars and some mecha series like
Gundam and
Macross. Also, the space pirate theme (kind of) reminds me of
Angel Linkseven though Angel Links is about escorting ships and not about Piracy.
