Mouretsu Pirates cast

Mr.A liked it, and he posted the first impressions even before I got my chance to post it. My original plan for this would be for Mr.A to do the episode blogging while I’d be the one in-charge of the First Impressions but I wasn’t able to tell him so here we are writing about the EP blogs. If there’s something I can say about this is it has potential, even if it has references on Star Wars and some mecha series like Gundam and Macross. Also, the space pirate theme (kind of) reminds me of Angel Linkseven though Angel Links is about escorting ships and not about Piracy.

It’s set a hundred years later after a war between the planets and the Stellar Alliance. To help their fleet, the government in the planet called “Sea of the Morningstar” issued a new edict called “The Letter of Marque,” which gives legality of Space Pirates to attack Stellar Alliance vessels.

At first, the title may mislead you that it’s nothing but fanservice-centred show but it actually has some pretty good plot+themes depth. The first episode starts with a mecha-like intro that settles for some slice-of-life bits. We’re introduced to Katou Marika, who’s noted by her father’s subordinates as a good pilot. She’s also working in a maid café, and the mentioned subordinates went there to check her out. The next day, the same subordinates went to her house to tell her and her mother that his father, the captain of the Bentenmaru space pirate ship, has died of food poisoning.

The subordinates

Under the laws, a pirate ship could only be inherited to the closest descendant of the captain. To Marika’s surprise, the helmsman of the Bentenmaru passed the strict interviews and got to be the substitute teacher at her school. Coincidentally, there’s also a new student in the persona of bespectacled Kurihara Chiaki. She also bears an aloof personality and her classmates, especially Marika, noted that she’s cute and beautiful. (Is aloofness a common trait among the bespectacled? Just a thought.)

That day, Marika had a shift in her work. Mafia-esque men posed as customers and they had all of their eyes on her. Later, Chiaki enters and ordered Parfait. She also asked Marika why she’s working while noting that she already has a position. After Chiaki took a bite on her parfait, Marika mentioned about Chiaki joining the Yacht club. However someone from the spaceport interrupted their conversation, claiming Marika’s mother is asking for her security, but Chiaki commented on why wasn’t the police approached on providing security. It caused a firefight between her and the mob/spaceport staff. After providing enough distraction, Chiaki and Marika escaped. While Marika’s mother seemed to be frustrated on what just happened…

Kurihara Chiaki

I’m smelling a conspiracy here. Chiaki’s role in the story is still unknown though we get some hints of her being an space agent or something. The death of Marika’s father by food poisoning is also fishy. Maybe there’s a plot to eliminate the Kato clan by the subordinates? I’m not sure…

On a side note, the seiyuu, namely Komatsu Mikako, Hanazawa Kana etc., who starred in this episode did their jobs well. More on this on my seiyuu note post to be published later this month. The character designs are reminiscent of those on old-school late-90s anime; while the art and animation still isn’t remarkable, probably to bait people into purchasing the Blu-Ray releases…
